Baby (INF) - under 2 years of age

Each Adult passenger may accompany:

  • One Baby (0-23 months old) OR
  • One Baby (0-23 months) and one Child (2-11 years old)

Infants up to 2 years of age do not occupy a seat and are seated on the lap of an adult.

There is one INFT quota per flight due to the limited availability of lifejackets on board. The SSR INFT must show HK status before any ticket is issued.

Always check the SSR INFT status
If it has a UC status, rebook the passengers to another flight!

Baby can occupy a seat provided a child fare is issued (or adult fare if no child discount is available):

  • In this case, the use of a car seat1 is mandatory and the carriage of this must be reported to TAP.
  • The Help Desk will insert information SSR for check-in in order to identify that the seat booked is for the use of a car seat.
  • Car seat transportation is not considered extra baggage and is free of charge.
  • Each adult can only accompany 1 INF, regardless of whether they need to occupy a seat or not.

1Check the car seat information tab on this page.

The travel of newborns is not recommended, in their first seven days of life. In emergency situations, please contact us so that the situation can be evaluated by our medical services.

Meals and Hand Baggage

TAP offers special meals for babies and children, although this must be requested at the time of booking.

When travelling with an infant on any TAP product, items that are indispensable for the duration of the flight may be taken as hand luggage. Adult passengers can take all necessary food with them, in quantities appropriate for the duration of the journey, except for water, which may be requested on board and heated by the flight crew. When going through security at the airport, you may be asked to taste the food (soup, yoghurt, fruit jar) that you are carrying.

Find out more on the page Prohibited and/or restricted items.

When a baby occupies a seat using a car seat, the car seat is considered hand luggage and its transport is free of charge.

Hold Baggage

The hold baggage allowance for infants (under 2 years of age) is one piece of 10 kg and the sum of the 3 dimensions must not exceed 115 cm / 45in (if travelling with one of these products: tap|basic, tap|classic, tap|plus, tap|executive or tap|top executive), plus a fully folding pram, car seat or basket.

If travelling with the tap|discount product, only one fully folding pram, car seat or basket is allowed.

Should two items be transported in the hold, or if the PNR has no children, then the CHDS service must be charged, by issuing an EMD-A (non-refundable). The maximum weight allowed per piece of luggage in the hold will always be 32Kg.

Babies turning 2 years after the start of the trip:

Due to the impossibility of combining ½ INF fare with ½ CHD fare for automatic issue, INFs completing 2 years after the start of the journey will be subject to the application of CHD fare for the entire journey.  In this case, at the time of the journey when the child is still an INF, they must use a child car seat. Check the conditions below.

Alternatively, as TAP's public fare is constructed by OWs, 2 tickets can always be issued:

  • 1 ticket with INF fare for the outward journey.
  • 1 ticket with CHD fare for the return.

The TAP system alerts through an SSR whenever, in a PNR with INF, this age change occurs:

WARNING: CHECK OSI/SSR STATUS CODE
WARNING - INFANT AGE MAY EXCEED FOR SOME SEGMENTS

Child (CHD) - over 2 years old and under 12 years old

Each Adult passenger may accompany:

  • One Baby (0-23 months old) OR
  • One Baby (0-23 months) and one Child (2-11 years old)

  • Up to 5 years of age may travel in a car seat1
  • Minors between the ages of 5 and 11 may travel without an adult, as long as the procedures for Unaccompanied Minors - UMNR is followed.

1Check the car seat information tab on this page.

Hand and Hold Baggage

The hold and hand baggage allowance for children (aged 2-11 years) is the same as for an adult.

If the passenger is travelling with a child between 2 and 5 years old, they may also carry a fully collapsible pram or baby seat free of charge, as long as it is used onboard.

Should two items be transported in the hold, or if the PNR has no children, then the CHDS service must be charged, by issuing an EMD-A (non-refundable). The maximum weight allowed per piece of luggage in the hold will always be 32Kg.

Children turning 12 years old after the beginning of the journey:

Due to the impossibility of combining ½ CHD fare with ½ ADT fare, for automatic issue, TAP informs that children turning 12 years old after the start of the journey will be subject to the application of adult fare for the entire journey.

Alternatively, as TAP public fares are constructed by OWs, two tickets can always be issued, one CHD ticket for the outward journey and another ADT ticket for the return journey, once the child has turned 12 years old.

Car Seats

Whenever an INF occupies a seat, a car seat must be authorised for transportation.

NOTE

Each adult can only accompany 1 INF, regardless of whether the INF needs a seat or not.

Check above, the tab about conditions for Infants (INF) under 2 years of age.

The transportation of a CHD (between 2 and 5 years old) that needs to travel in a car seat must also be reported to the Helpdesk for the necessary approvals.

A manual seat reservation process is required due to the necessary analysis of eligible seats for this type of equipment. In the case of infants, booking is free of charge on any fare, both for the infant's seat and for those accompanying them (provided they are in the same PNR); in the case of children between 2 and 5 years, the payment will be according to the fare issued.

When used during the flight, the car seat is transported free of charge. The car seat must be certified by a country's competent authorities for use in air transport, for example:

  • UN standard ECE R44/03 or R44/04 or newer series
  • FAA (US) FMVSS 213
  • Canada CMVSS 213/213.1
  • Germany TÜV: TÜV/958-01/2001. FAA, ECE R44.04 OR R44.03.

The seat base of the car seat must not exceed 40x40 cm (15.7x15.7 in).

A separate seat and base are not permitted and the chair must have seat belts that pass through the shoulders

Seat Assignments - Families

TAP assigns seats automatically and free of charge at check-in, in the standard area, for adults and children in the same booking, regardless of the chosen fare. Whenever possible, and whenever available, adult seats will be assigned in the same row of seats as the child, or in an adjacent row.
We recommend that passengers choose their seats for the whole family in advance to ensure that they travel together and in their preferred seats.

Important Notes

For safety reasons, on flights operated by TAP, an adult passenger travelling alone may only travel with one infant.

On flights operated by TAP, if the passenger is travelling with one infant and two children, one of the children must be UMNR (so that there is assistance for the second child and provided it meets the UMNR requirements).

If the journey involves other companies(2), different rules may apply. Please check with the companies involved where this is the case. On an interline journey, a minor will only be accepted as UMNR if all companies involved have confirmed the service before issuing the ticket.

(2)Before booking confirm whether the route contains TP flights operated in code-share. In general, the reservation must be made in the code of the operating carrier and its rules apply.

It is mandatory to insert the minors' PTC in the PNR under Name Field in order to generate an SSR CHLD or SSR INFT. This SSR is of vital operational importance. Failure to insert this information may result in the issuance of an ADM of 25Eur. Please refer to the "Responsible Booking Practices" manual (10MAY2022) available online.

For safety reasons, children cannot go seated in emergency exit rows. If an SSR CHLD or SSR INFT is entered in the PNR, this will prevent a seat in these rows from being incorrectly assigned.
