Important additional information
Seasonal Baggage Embargo on some African Routes
TAP maintains the extra baggage embargo to/from some African destinations as listed below.
During this embargo, it is not permitted to book and sell any extra baggage for the following routes and dates:
2024/2025
Having as a final destination ACC, DSS, VXE, RAI, OXB*, TMS:
- Christmas/New Year – from 07DEC24 to 06JAN25*
- Easter – 04APR25 to 20APR25
- Summer – 07JUN25 to 07SEP25*
- Final destination OXB, the Christmas period will be anticipated to 09NOV24 and the Summer period will be extended until 26SEP25.
Having as a departure point ACC:
- Christmas/New Year – from 25DEC24 to 06JAN25
- Easter – 21APR25 to 27APR25
- Summer – 07JUN25 to 07SEP25
No excess baggage (weight and/or dimensions) or extra luggage will be accepted. It is only permitted to carry the baggage included on the issued fare within the regular allowance, i.e., the sum of the three dimensions (height, width and length) not exceeding 158 cm and a maximum weight of 23 Kg in Economy class or 32 Kg in Business class.
This restriction applies to all tickets, regardless of the type of product purchased or Frequent Flyer status, except for DISCOUNT fare tickets, where one piece of paid baggage (FBAG = first bag) can be added.
Any request for Sports Equipment, SBAG, XBAG, BULK, AVIH, MUSS, MUSM or MUSL will not be accepted.
New reservations for travel on those dates and routes (according to the mentioned direction of travel) will receive the status “UC” or “NO”.
When booking connecting flights, “UC” or “NO” messages will only be sent to the flight of the above-mentioned routes. Feeder or de-feeder flights will not receive such status, so be careful not to book an extra bag or service on one of these flights (as it will not be accepted on the African route).
Travel Involving Other Airlines - "Most Significant Carrier" (MSC)
Since 01APR2015 the Most Significant Carrier (MSC) is the Marketing Carrier.
a) The first marketing carrier crossing the IATA tariff Area (for travel across one Tariff Area);
b) The first marketing carrier crossing the IATA Sub-area (for travel within a Tariff Area);
c) The first carrier flying an international sector (for travel within a Sub-Area);
According to IATA Reso 302, whenever there is a stopover at an intermediate point, the system breaks down the baggage calculation and a new assessment of baggage allowance and charges can be applied from that point. However, if the itinerary only contains TAP flights and no Interline operating flights, TAP allows keeping the same free baggage allowance from the origin/destination even if a stopover occurs. This exception is only valid for TAP/NI/WI-operated flights.
IMPORTANT NOTES:
If the journey starts on a flight operated by another carrier, do not issue an EMD for extra baggage. The charge for additional baggage is paid directly to the carrier making the first leg and checking in the baggage to the final destination."
Please note that if passengers have separate tickets, whether TAP or TP/Interline, it is not possible to check in the luggage to the final destination.
Therefore, baggage will be:
- Labelled only for the leg of the first ticket
- Collected by the passenger at the end of the journey of the first ticket
- Checked in again to the final destination
Baggage on connecting flights to Brazil, the United States or Canada
Please inform passengers with checked baggage on connecting flights in Brazil, the United States of America or Canada that it is mandatory to collect their baggage for customs control in these countries! They must then follow the directions and go to the baggage transfer point.

Additional Luggage Care
General Recommendations
NOTE:
Please note that if passengers have separate tickets, whether TAP or TP/Interline, it is not possible to check in the luggage to the final destination.
Therefore, baggage will be:
- Labelled only for the leg of the first ticket
- Collected by the passenger at the end of the journey of the first ticket
- Checked in again to the final destination
- Baggage should always be properly labelled with name and address and locked with a key or padlock.
- Some items may not be carried in the hold, but can be carried as hand baggage:
- Fragile or perishable items;
- Essential medicines;
- Keys;
- ID documents or passport;
- Professional or academic documents;
- Samples;
- Electronic devices (for example laptops, tablets or portable DVD players).
- Bottles of alcoholic beverages and/or olive oil are allowed as checked baggage up to 5 litres per passenger. Larger quantities will be considered transportation of merchandise and, as such, is subject to special conditions for storage and import/export that can only be carried out by registering these goods as cargo. However, the quantity officially permitted by the import laws of the country of destination and that authorized by the airline, whichever is the lower, shall always be checked beforehand. See the restrictions of TAP here.
- TV screens must be dispatched as cargo - TAP AIR CARGO (link)
- When checking baggage, passengers must ensure the baggage claim tag shows the correct final destination.
- When collecting the baggage, passengers must make sure the number on the tag is the same as the number on the claim ticket.
- Bags must not be overfilled.
- Complaints about baggage irregularities should be reported immediately to TAP staff before leaving the baggage claim area when the bags are claimed or are discovered missing.
For safety reasons, TAP advises all passengers not to transport baggage of others unless they know what it contains.
Check IATA's Customs, Currency & Airport Tax regulations for import/export regulations per country.
