It is the passenger's responsibility to present valid travel documents, like Identity Cards, Passports, Visas or other documents like vaccination which are required to allow entry in certain countries. Nevertheless, it's expected that the travel agent acts as an adviser.
- Check all your client's documents. This procedure will avoid him/her refusal at the gate or eventually at border control at the destination.
Validity of Passport, VISA requirements, vaccinations or other requirements needed to enter that specific country can easily be accessed namely through IATA Travel Centre.
On the topic of APIs, you will also find recommendations on the data required by some countries (such as the USA, Canada or Brazil, among others) and that must be inserted in the reservations in advance.
In the case of minors travelling without their parents or legal guardians, please consult the Unaccompanied Minors (UMNR) page and the Portal of the Aliens and Borders Service for all the information on the conditions for minors leaving the National Territory.
- Always check in TIMATIC and in the Sherpa tool the needs of documents, visas, permits, vaccinations, etc. according to the route or destination.
- We recommend that passengers take copies of their travel documents, passports or identity cards, as well as boarding passes and hotel reservations in case they lose the originals.
Electronic Passports
All EU citizens, of legal age and holders of an e-Passport, can use the electronic border crossing devices at the main Portuguese airports.
If crossing the Schengen Area, with this method, avoid queues by using the RAPID System - Automatic Recognition of Documentary Identified Passengers.
How to use:
- You insert the Passport into the device, open and face it downwards. You should wait while the reading is done;
- When the door opens, you should remove the Passport and go forward;
- Then stand in the designated place on the floor and face the mirror;
- Advance as soon as the second door opens.
Passengers should avoid:
- Covering the face;
- Wearing hats;
- Using mobile phones or other electronic devices;
- Wearing sunglasses.
Advantages of the Electronic Passport:
- Secure identification;
- Protection from the illegal appropriation of identity and misuse of the document;
- Protection against attempts to alter the document;
- Help in detecting false or manipulated documents.
- For more information, consult the RAPID by SEF website.
Schengen Visa
It is the passengers' responsibility to obtain the necessary visas for those destination countries that have this legal requirement. Passports must be valid for the period of stay or beyond.
All passengers from countries not belonging to the European Community who transit between two Schengen Area member countries must have a Schengen visa.
Consult HERE all the countries from which citizens must have a Schengen visa for their journeys and also those which do not need one.
It is of the utmost importance that you alert your customers to this obligation and help them obtain the correct information. Always consult TIMATIC and if in doubt, consulates or embassies.
For more information on Schengen Area borders and all the conditions for access to visas, visit the European Commission's website.

Vaccination against Yellow Fever
It is important to check the restrictions and requirements of the sanitary measures of each country.
To do this, confirm below if your client's destination requires the International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (CIVP) for Yellow Fever.
What is the CIVP and how can it be obtained?
The International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (CIVP) is a document that proves the vaccination against Yellow Fever and other diseases. It's essential, as some countries require this document to enter their territory, in order to prevent the spread of disease and contamination.
If your client does not yet have the CIVP, TAP recommends the strict following of the regulations of the National Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA), in order to issue the certificate as soon as possible.
Attention
The Yellow Fever CIVP must be taken at least 11 (eleven) days before the journey. For more information about specific destinations or connections, please consult the ANVISA website.
Find HERE the full list of countries where it is mandatory to present the International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (CIVP), according to the National Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA).
