Special cabin baggage
Updated on 01 Aug 2024

On TAP flights, passengers may request, for a fee, an extra seat for:

  • EXST - for additional comfort or passengers with fractured lower limbs
  • CBBG - for fragile items that cannot be carried as normal cabin baggage, but which passengers do not wish to carry in the hold

CBBG - SPECIAL CABIN BAGGAGE

TERMS OF ACCEPTANCE

It is considered special cabin baggage those articles that must be transported in the cabin, but are not considered free hand baggage.

  • Fragile items: e.g.: Works of art, musical instruments;
  • Voluminous items: e.g.: Large musical instruments;
  • Valuable items: e.g. diplomatic bag

If you are not sure whether the item is considered special cabin baggage, please contact the Agency Helpdesk.

REQUIREMENTS

To ensure its safe transportation, special cabin baggage requires the reservation of an extra seat and must comply with the following conditions:

  • The maximum weight allowed for transport in the cabin is 30 kg / 66.13 Ibs. Whereas the maximum dimensions allowed are:
    • 155x42x25 from the floor in the cabin or
    • 110x42x50 on top of the seat;
    • never exceed the height of the back of the seat extra
  • The number of extra seats required will be defined by the carrier.

The reservation for special baggage should be made at the same time the travel is booked.

If the service is requested after the passenger already has his reservation and ticket, the extra seat must be requested to the airline, which will create a new NCP reservation (Non-Commercial PNR) a cross-reference to that passenger reservation.

For large volumes, it may be necessary to block more than one seat. This number will be defined by Operational Control.

To book the carriage of musical instruments in the cabin, please contact our Agency Helpdesk at least 72 hours before the flight to ensure the proper packaging of the musical instrument.

Important Information

For safety reasons, the extra seat for transportation of special baggage is not granted for passengers travelling close to emergency exits.

Seat reservations resulting from the purchase of CBBG may require payment for both seats (passenger's and CBBG's) since the rules of the fare product issued to the passenger apply. For information on this ancillary service, please see the "Seating Reservation"  page.

RESERVATION PROCEDURES

The extra seat will be reserved together with the passenger using the code CBBG in the name field with the passenger's last name.

Ex: 2SILVA/MANUELMR/CBBG

Only 1 extra seat can be booked in the passenger reservation. In certain situations, it may be necessary to book more than one extra seat. For safety reasons, this decision will be made by TAP Operational Control.

If the service is requested after the passenger already has his/her booking and ticket, the extra seat must be requested to the airline, which will create a new NCP (Non-Commercial PNR) and cross-reference to the passenger's booking.

An SSR CBBG must be added with the description of the booking.

Ex: SSR CBBG-1CELLO 10KG DIMS 75X45X110CM  (number and dimensions per piece)

GDS Entries

Amadeus
SR CBBG-1CELLO  10KG DIMS 75x45x110CM/P1 - instead of "CELLO" specify which item is to be transported

Galileo
SI.P1/CBBG*1CELLO  10KG DIMS 75x45x110CM - instead of "CELLO" specify which item is to be transported

Sabre
3CBBG1/CELLO  10KG DIMS 75x45x110CM-1.1 - instead of "CELLO" specify which item is to be transported

SERVICE PAYMENT

The extra seat for CBBG applies to something that the passenger carries in the cabin and that will occupy at least one seat. Each seat occupied is subject to a charge.

If purchased at the same time, the amount charged by the CBBG is the same fare and the same YQ applicable to the route on which the passenger uses the extra seat (considering the brand on the passenger's ticket).

If the service is requested/purchased after the ticketing, the extra seat must be requested to the airline which will create a new NCP (Non-Commercial PNR) booking a cross-reference to that passenger booking. In this case, the lowest fare according to availability at the time must be used (considering the brand on the passenger's ticket - keeping in mind that the same or higher fare must be applied).

NOTE - If the passenger travelling on a return trip uses only the extra seat on a segment, then the lowest fare according to availability at the time + YQ (considering the brand on the passenger ticket) for that one-way segment applies.

Penalties for changes also apply to the extra seat.

Discount ID/AD/IT fares are excluded. In such cases, the lowest fare according to the current availability of the route on which the passenger uses the extra seat applies.

 PREPARATION AND ISSUANCE

Check some examples:

1 CBBG with Round Trip / Passenger with Round Trip

Whenever the baggage route is the same as that of the passenger (Ex. the CBBG is carried on the same Round Trip as the passenger):

  • the booking must be made simultaneously for the passenger and the CBBG and
  • issued two tickets
  • The passenger ticket will be issued as normal.
  • For the CBBG ticket it will be assumed the same fare and YQ applicable to the route where the passenger uses the extra seat (considering the brand on the passenger ticket) and exempting airport charges.

Example of the final appearance of the CBBG mask:

If the service is requested after the passenger already has his reservation and ticket, the extra seat must be requested to the carrier, which will create a new NCP reservation (Non Commercial PNR) a cross-reference to that passenger reservation.

Since the NCP reservation does not allow quotation or issue, the payment of the CBBG under these conditions will imply the manipulation/reissue of the passenger's ticket to include the corresponding value.

1 CBBG with One Way / Passenger with Round Trip

You must request the extra seat reservation for CBBG to TAP. This will be reserved in a separately created NCP (Non-Commercial PNR).

  • The passenger ticket must be issued, including a Q in the fare construction, with the value corresponding to the CBBG.
  • The lowest fare according to availability at the time + YQ (considering the brand on the passenger's ticket) for this one-way segment applies to the CBBG.

2CBBG with Round Trip / Passenger with Round Trip

In case the CBBG needs to occupy two seats:

- A reservation should be made, blocking 2 seats:

  • 1 for the passenger and 1 for a CBBG;
  • The second seat for the CBBG must be requested to TAP.  Operational control will create a separate NCP (Non-Comercial PNR) for the second CBBG.

- Two tickets will be issued:

  • The passenger ticket will be issued as normal.
  • For the CBBG ticket, it will be assumed twice the same fare and YQ applicable to the route where the passenger uses the extra seats (considering the brand on the passenger ticket) and exempting airport charges

EXST - Extra seat reservation

This service translates into an unoccupied seat next to or in front of the passenger. Extra seat reservations may also be requested for passengers with fractured lower limbs.

In the case of a passenger with fracture(s), special assistance or medical authorisation may be required for the journey. Please refer to the Medical Cases page.

For booking and issuing procedures, please refer to the Extra Seat Reservation page.
