Passengers with developmental disabilities - DPNA -

They are passengers with learning difficulties, dementia, Alzheimer's, Down Syndrome, among other psychological or cognitive disabilities that travel alone and in need of ground assistance. An SSR DPNA (Disabled Passenger Needing Assistance) should be inserted in the reservations indicating the type of disability.

In addition to the medical equipment they may need, they can carry up to 2 pieces of mobility equipment, including an electric wheelchair.  

Pursuant to EU  Regulation 1107/2006 concerning the rights of disabled persons and persons with reduced mobility when traveling by air - note that:

  • If passengers intends to travel with their own wheelchair, a 48 hour notice must be given.
  • The type of wheelchair and battery description must be provided. 
  • The wheelchair may only be carried as hold baggage.
  • The passenger may also bring an emotional support or psychiatric service animal, provided that the following conditions are met:
    • 48 hours advance notice;
    • handled as medical case: submission of a MEDIF form filled by passenger's doctor. Form must be sent to for analysis by TAP's own medical team.

On flights to and from the USA (not applicable for connecting flights) the following exceptions should be considered:

  • Emotional support dogs (ESAN) weighing more than 8kg/17lbs are allowed in the cabin.
  • The maximum recommended weight and size is 40kg/88lbs and 62cm/24in in height.
  • They may travel out of the container but have to sit at the passengers feet without protruding into the aisle.
  • They may not move about the cabin.
  • Use of leash is recommended.
  • Transportation of animals of greater weight and size requires the analysis and authorization of the Safety department, to garantee that the animal does not disturb the service;
  • On A330 and A340 aircrafts ESAN may travel in Business Class cabin.

The DPNA facility is not to be used for elderly people, passengers who only speak one language, first time travelers or those who have orientation problems. For these cases request assistance at the check in counters.  At Lisbon, Funchal and Oporto airportsTAP has available a Personalized Assistance service for departure, transfer and arrival formalities. This service is paid for.
