It is the pet owner's responsibility to ensure that their pet is fully compliant for UK entry using the Pet Travel Scheme.

Pet owner must be informed to contact authorities and confirm the UK Pet Travel Scheme (PETS) requirements.

The links below will give further details.

Pet Travel Scheme (PETS) rules for pets coming into the United Kingdom (UK) will change on January 2012 when the UK brings its procedures into line with the European Union.

Pet Travel Scheme - for pets entering the UK before January 2012

In order to comply with UK PETS measures, pets must:

> Have proof that dog is a recognized assistance dog

Identification card supplied by the organization which trained the dog.

> Be fitted with a microchip

Before any of the other procedures for PETS are carried out, pet must be fitted with a microchip so that it can be properly identified.

> Be vaccinated

After the microchip has been fitted pet must be vaccinated against rabies. There is no exemption to this requirement, even if pet has a current rabies vaccination

> Be blood tested

After pet has been vaccinated, it must be blood tested to make sure that the vaccine has given it a satisfactory level of protection against rabies. All vaccination and blood testing sections (on Pet Passport) must be signed and stamped by an Official Veterinarian (OV). The pet veterinarian will be able to advice on this.

> Be treated against ticks and a tapeworm

Pet must be treated against ticks and tapeworms not less than 24 hours and not more than 48 hours before it is checked in with an approved transport company for its journey into the UK.

> Have travel documents

For animals being prepared in an EU country, you should get an EU pet passport. If you are preparing your animal in a non-EU listed country you will need to obtain an official third country veterinary certificate although note that Croatia, Gibraltar, Norway, San Marino and Switzerland are also issuing passports. This must show that your pet has been microchipped, vaccinated against rabies and satisfactorily blood tested.
